The children of Palaung IDPs in Namkhan cannot access education because they don’t have certificates of permission for moving schools since they fled from their homes in 2012. Even though the children have passed exams in 2012, they can’t further  their education in 2013 without certificates for moving schools.

There are 379 IDP families in the camp and one third (1/3) are children. Some children joined the school at Namkhan Township but others had to become monks and nuns for their education and study at the monastery.  They face a lot of problem while they are studying in the monastery especially girls.  Many children cannot further their education because they don’t have certificates of permission for moving schools. Most parents cannot bring their certificate for moving schools because they fled in 2012.

One of student’s parent said, “the teacher from school said if you want your child to continue studying, you have to get a certificate of permission for moving schools. We fled in 2012 and cannot return to get the certificate since the fighting is taking place. We also don’t have transportation fee. We don’t know how to handle it.”

Now it is the raining season and the water is flooding the IDP camps. The IDPs need the sand and stone to cover and protect from flooding but IDPs don’t have money. The UNISEF provides foods and Kayunar Groups provide curry  for up to 200 Kyat per-day. There isn’t enough humanitarian aid for IDPs and some IDPs have to be day-laborers  for income. The day-labor does not happen everyday and most of IDPs are jobless. Even though the IDPs want to work, there is no job for them.
The Palaung IDPs in Namkhan have been fleeing from their homeland since 2012 but they cannot return back. The children in Namkhan camp are suffering diarrhea and can’t access enough medicine in this month, May 2013.
