Statement by the United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC) | February 21, 2016

1. The UNFC (extended) council meeting was held successfully from February 18 to 21, 2016. The meeting reviewed various aspects of the current political and military situations, matters relating to the federal constitution, necessary ideological principles and departmental agendas.

2. For the realization of political dialogues and negotiations, the UNFC formed its renovated and expanded Delegation for Political Negotiation (DPN). This delegation will strive for the realization of genuine peace, the inclusion of all the ethnic armed resistance organizations, in all stages of the political dialogue process, and for the emergence of tripartite dialogue.

3. Due to the current battles between the Palaung State Liberation Front (PSLF/TNLA) and the Restoration Council of Shan State (RCSS/SSA), local populations have to flee from their hearths and homes and the number of thousands of war refugees is on the increase daily. Responsible persons of the two sides are earnestly urged to find solution peacefully to the conflicts through conciliation and dialogue. For the two sides to meet for resolution through dialogue and conciliation, our UNFC on its part will make the effort to mediate.

4. We see that the current government and Tatmadaw (Myanmar Army) are using the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) as a military and political weapon. We strongly condemn the current government and Tatmadaw’s acts of causing racial hatred among the ethnic nationalities, with the military-political strategy of divide-and-conquer.
