Three civilians were killed in clashes among ethnic groups in northern Shan State over the weekend, bringing to five the total number of civilian fatalities since the fighting erupted in late October.
Three other civilians were wounded in the fighting between the Restoration Council of Shan State (RCSS) and the Shan State Progressive Party (SSPP) in Nar Lot village, Lashio township, on Saturday.
The SSPP, together with the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), have joined forces to fight the RCSS over territorial disputes.
The fatalities were a 10-year-old boy and two men, according to a nongovernmental organisation helping civilians.
“A boy was among those killed and a Shan woman teacher was among the injured. The residents are very scared. We’re doing as much as we can,” said Sai Wan Leng Kham, a member of the Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House).
U San Saw, administrator of the adjacent Sae Khan village, identified the victims as Aik Ku, 30, Aik Sai, 10, and Sai Nunt, 30.
In a statement, the SSPP accused the RCSS of killing the civilians. The RCSS did not respond to the accusation.
It said the RCSS swooped down on the Nar Lot before dawn and targeted weapons in the village. It said the attack also resulted in heavy property damage.
Residents fled their homes and sought shelter in nearby Nar Ma Khaw village.
