Description
This photo gallery displays life in The Best Friend School, one of the many Burmese migrant schools based in the area surrounding the Thai border town of Mae Sot. According to Burmese Migrant Workers’ Education Committee, Mae Sot and the surrounding area are home to an estimated 200,000 registered and unregistered migrants and refugees from Burma. The region has dozens of migrant schools, founded by local and international CBOs and NGOs to meet the needs of tens of thousands of children who have crossed the border from Burma to Thailand. These migrant schools are not registered schools in the Thai education system and receive no support from the Thai government. Instead, they rely on fundraising and international support to keep the schools running. The Best Friend School is supported by Colabora Birmania and Help Without Frontiers.
